Daily Self-Care: 3 Simple Steps to Achieving the Life of Your Dreams

I get it. We’re all busy.

Too busy.

It’s hard to find time for daily self-care when you have SO much to do every day.

In fact, I’m pretty sure there aren’t possibly enough hours for you to accomplish everything you want to accomplish.

We’ve got that out of the way.

Look, it doesn’t matter how much you can do in a day – how much you can clean, how much you work, how many extracurriculars you and your kids participate in, how many bake sales you manage, or how many social events you can throw – if, at the end of the day, you feel beat.

Exhausted.

Unfulfilled.

Sick.

Suffering.

You have to start taking care of yourself every. single. day.

I know. You’re a mom. Or a dad. Or a college student.

You work SO hard.

And that’s amazing.

But you won’t be able to continue to work toward your dreams and goals when your body decides it needs a break and you’re wiped out for a week due to sickness or exhaustion.

So let’s chat a little bit about how to start taking better care of yourself on a daily basis.

You won’t find a list here of different actions you can do for self-care. You can find some great ideas from this post.

Instead, I want to show you how to make daily self-care an actual part of your life.

What Does Daily Self-Care Look Like for You?

Self-care is kind of a hot topic right now.

Everyone wants to talk about how a bubble bath or pampering time once a week or so is the key to being your best self.

It may help, but it’s not going to change your life.

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed… If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.

Seems pretty simple.

If you want to begin to change your life and start building the life of your dreams, you HAVE to start with tiny, DAILY actions.

It’s the actions you do consistently over time that build the life you end up living.

Think about it.

Going for a run once every few months isn’t going to do anything for you, but if you start running 3-5 days a week consistently over a period of weeks, months, and years, you will see some sort of change in your mentality, endurance, and physique.

To pull it together with what McRaven said, when you make your bed every now and then it’s not going to do you much good, but as you make your bed every morning, you’ll start gaining that small sense of pride that will affect other areas of your life.

You’ve got to determine what your ideal life looks like.

Break it down into the tiny steps that will get you there.

Then incorporate those steps into your DAILY life.

Think in broad terms initially.

For example, you may want to be healthier.

Your ideal self is someone who enjoys working out and eating real, healthy food.

So how do you take this broad idea of a healthier self and turn it into reality?

Break it down.

What can you do every single day to consistently work toward your ideal self?

  • Drink more water
  • Eat healthier foods – more fruit, more veggies, more protein
  • Cut out extra calories – sodas, sugar, candy, etc.
  • Walk
  • Work out
  • Floss
  • Take a vitamin
  • Get sunshine
  • Meditate

These daily actions don’t have to be huge because the accumulation of performing them each and every day will lead to huge changes.

Make Them Inseparable From Your Established Habits

Your best chance of getting these small daily habits to stick is to make them inseparable from the habits you already have established.

A simple example: if you struggle with flossing your teeth before bed, make it a point to brush (something you always do), floss (new habit), and then apply chapstick (something you always do).

Established Habit + New Habit + Established Habit

Sandwich the new activity in between the tasks you always do no matter what.

I used to have a hard time keeping up with reading my Bible daily until I started combining it with my morning coffee.

What are your established daily habits?

I’m sure you already do a few of these:

  • Wake up
  • Shower
  • Drink coffee
  • Brush your teeth
  • Put on shoes
  • Use the bathroom
  • Change into pajamas
  • Get into bed
  • Go to sleep

Why am I stating the obvious?

I want you to see that attaching new habits to established habits isn’t hard.

There are things that you must do or choose to do every day.

When you attach the new habit to the existing habit, your daily self-care will start falling into place naturally.

Track It, Baby, Track It

I’m a big fan of using my planner to track everything.

It’s not pretty, but it keeps me on track and accountable in a way I’ve never experienced before.

Figure out what works for you.

Are you digitally inclined?

More of a pen and paper person?

Grab what works for you and then…

Track it.

And before you know it, you’ll be 6 months down the road and realize that the task that used to be such a chore for you is now something you can’t live without.

And isn’t that the point?

When you put the actions that drive your life FORWARD in a place of priority in your life to the extent that you can’t imagine life any other way, you have no choice but to move toward the life you want.

The point is progress, not perfection.

Tracking doesn’t mean you have to have a perfect streak.

Tracking is simply a way for you to notice and acknowledge that you may have skipped a certain action for a few days and it’s time to pick it back up.

Don’t beat yourself up or get stressed over it.

Acknowledge it.

Do it today.

The Life of Your Dreams Requires Consistency

Time is going to pass whether you are moving toward your ideal life, sitting stagnant, or actively self-sabotaging.

Wouldn’t you rather put in the small daily self-care actions now that lead to a better life later?

Don’t look back in five years wishing you’d started running now, started eating better now, started that blog you’ve always wanted now, started saving money better now.

Be the person that looks back in five years and feels proud of the work and the consistency that has built the fulfilling and wonderful life you’re living.
